“The Farm” is the oldest (formal) intentional community in the United States. Founded in 1971, it covers 6 square miles of beautiful rolling hills near Summertown, Tennessee. Thus it’s been 43 years in the making — forming, storming, norming and performing. As one of the men we spoke with put it, “Any issue that can arise in a community — they’ve experienced it.”
My partner and I have visited The Farm to participate in “The Farm Experience” weekend; below is a glimpse of what lies beyond “The Farm” gates…

FYI, Twin Oaks Community in Louisa, VA was founded in 1967, before The Farm. Maybe The Farm is the oldest (formal) permaculturey intentional community in the USA.
Sounds like you got a lot from this experience. I imagine “The Farm” looked and functioned VERY differently back then!
In 1974 I visited the farm and stayed with a family for about a week. At that time I worked with the Fencing crew building fence and other related jobs. It was an experience I will never forget and enjoyed every day I was there.
