It’s beginning of winter in Sydney, but planting in the garden continues. Below is a list of cool-season vegetables that can be planed June. I received this list in a newsletter from Gardenate and then enhanced it by adding photos and my own tips.
1. Cabbage (Brassica oleracea)
Where: grow in seed trays and plant out in 4-6 weeks
Harvest: August – October
2. Broad beans (also known as Fava beans, Vicia faba)
Where: sow in the garden
Harvest: September – December
3. Garlic (Allium sativum)
Where: plant cloves directly into soil
Harvest: October – December
4. Kale (also known as Borecole, Acephala)
Where: grow in seed trays and plant out in 4-6 weeks
Harvest: August – September
5. Lettuce (Lactuca sativa)
Where: sow in the garden, or start in seed trays and plant out in 4-6 weeks
Harvest: August – September
6. Mustard greens (also known as Gai Choy, Brassica juncea)
Where: sow in the garden
Harvest: from August
7. Onion (Allium cepa)
Where: grow in seed trays and plant out in 4-6 weeks
Harvest: December – February
8. Peas (Fabaceae family)
Where: sow in the garden
Harvest: from September
9. Radish (Raphanus sativus)
Where: sow in the garden
Harvest: from August
10. Shallots (also known as Eschalots, Allium cepa)
Where: plant small bulblets with stem just showing above ground
Harvest: September – October
11. Snow peas (also known as Sugar Peas, Mangetout, Chinese Peas, Pisum sativum)
Where: sow in the garden
Harvest: September – October
12. Carrots (Daucus carota)
Where: sow in the garden
Harvest: August – September
